The current prolonged Santa Ana event is a function of the high-pressure ridge that is sitting over California, said atmospheric scientist Scott Capps, the principal of Atmospheric Data Solutions.Source: Wind is the culprit in 2017’s horrific wildfire season – LA Times
Unfortunately, experts indicate we may see more of the same. Atmospheric Data Solutions states, “There will be an above normal number of Santa Ana wind days for both the December and the December through February periods.”
Weather models are at the heart of what Capps does. They are used both for forecasting and to recreate historical data. Increasingly however over the last decade machine learning (ML) has come to be applied in atmospheric science.
